2008 Lake Treatment Plan

We are entering into year four in our collaboration with the MN DNR to control Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLPW). As many of you noticed, we made significant progress thus far. Based upon recommendations from James Johnson and the MN DNR, the WLCA plans to continue whole lake treatment for at least one additional year to achieve adequate turion depletion for better long-term control of curlyleaf.

The native plant community appears to be reestablishing in some areas previously dominated by curlyleaf, but several species of native plant (most notably coontail) have been negatively impacted by the treatments in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Accordingly, the WLCA plans to transition to using endothall in 2008 and beyond, with large-scale spot treatments rather than true wholelake dosing. Previous studies with endothall have shown effective control of curlyleaf without severe impacts to coontail and other native plants.

We are still analyzing results from last year’s storm sewer monitoring pilot project. These results will help us determine next steps for managing the nutrients and algae in Weaver Lake. As always, we will continue our close collaboration with the City of Maple Grove and MN DNR. Read more about our Lake Management Efforts.

Thanks to the prudent fiscal management by the WLCA Board, we are happy to announce that we will once again be asking for only $75 this year to fund these important lake improvement projects. We hope you will continue to contribute - it is really making a difference. Go to the Membership and Contribution form.
